I'm not one of those people Who saunters through life Cloaked in confidence I walk a fine, fine wire I'm fragile, not frail I'm a teller of tales. I started with 88 keys And ended up with six strings Either way, these two hands of mine Have always spoken for me I write myself into the chords I drag my heart up and down the fret board. This small world is getting smaller As I search for songs in the squalor As glasses of water go, baby, you're always getting taller. I've never been prone to gamble I love a sure thing I've never been known to ramble But I'm developing a hankering I'm fragile, not frail I wanna travel and tell my tales There's a comfort in strangers That I find hard to explain I think what excites me Is the blank slate of my name You only know what you learn For as long as the flame burns This small world is getting smaller As I search for songs in the squalor As glasses of water go, baby, you're always getting taller.

We took the rocket to the crypt When he still lived on Franklin I was so green I was mesmerized by everything And my first drink at a gay bar Was an amaretto sour CC's was still on Madison And Thumper's was right across the street from it The Bus Stop was so small Nowhere to hide at all I sat there with my sidecar Shy but braver then than now by far Piecora's was the spot To eat before we got sloshed I'd be swooning left and right Staring holes in the checkered red and white I never knew how new I was I never knew how much things would change I never dreamed that one day They would try to drive us out of this place The ghosts of old haunts buried under new construction A face lift with a price Bright new condos shining like candy lies Most of them are long gone Oral tradition carries on But maybe if you're lucky You can rise up from the dead just like Charlie I never knew how new I was I never knew how much things would change I never dreamed that one day They would try to drive us out of this place

What is it about those Colorado boys? They paint with stunning colors and make such beautiful noise! If I didn't know better I'd say it was a ploy To get me to move out there and find myself some joy. And what is it about those Colorado guys? They got me feelin' Colorado Rocky Mountain high All they gotta do is crack a little smile To get me feelin' giddy and giggly for a while And I know it's just a pipe dream But that ain't gonna stop me From breathin' in and breathin' out And I know it's just a pipe dream But that ain't gonna stop me From thinkin' about you One of these nights we'll meet in outer space We'll supersede the satellites and see each other face-to-face We'll make each other laugh until our sadness is erased I hear that Saturn is the perfect private picnic place. And I know it's just a pipe dream But that ain't gonna stop me From breathin' in and breathin' out And I know it's just a pipe dream But that ain't gonna stop me From thinkin' about you

Halloween in Portland 2015 Was the best fucking Halloween It started out real quiet I spent the morning with Renee Breakfast burritos are an awesome way to start the day Rare Birds & Rosemary were still echoing from the north Harmonizing with their own album in my CD player And the rain came down And the streets started to flood There was adventure in my blood Then I went online to troll That’s when I met John & Jeff Though we didn't exchange names until after sex After some refreshment We started in on round two That's when I noticed one of Jeff’s awesome tattoos It was the oracle from The Neverending Story The hipster I'll never be couldn't handle the glory It's safe to say that their charms floored me.

If wishes were horses I'd glue Humpty Dumpty back together again But there would be no point in doing so Because he wants to stay broken Well, I guess I could have an omelet for breakfast. No point in wasting a broken egg. You kept me in the dark for so long I was drowning in doubt Then your anger shone like a supernova And squinting, I figured it all out Well, I guess I could use this shade that you threw my way To dim the light of the white flag I'm gonna raise. And I guess that nothing's as bad as I make it out to be That's what all my friends tell me And I think that this time I agree with them But only because this is much worse than I could have imagined Even in my dark mind And ain't it funny what time will do to a smile?

Blood Red 04:04
Sitting on my bed, starin' out my window Christmas lights overhead, almost as white as snow Wonderin' why my blood is red and why I bleed It feels blue when it's inside of you but you know it's red when it leaves Come those who wish to come, stay those who wish to stay Fare those who wish to fare, harmless to me and mine Three circles around the house bearing the Yuletide light With just enough mead inside of me to warm the bitter cold of the winter night Sitting on my bed, starin' out my window Christmas lights overhead, almost as white as snow Wonderin' why my blood is red and why I bleed It feels blue when it's inside of you but you know it's red when it leaves

Sweet mother Jesus Open your blessed womb And shower grace down upon those who claim to follow you Holy father Mary Plant your seed of love In the mouths of the songless angels that are flyin' around up above And I know they got it wrong When they told us what you said Forgive them, mother, they know not what they do Sweet mother Jesus Roll away the stones In front of the eyes of the blind followers sitting at the foot of your throne Teach them how to love Love Teach them how to hate Hate And deny them not entrance to your pearly gates And I know they got it wrong When they told us what you said Forgive them, mother, they know not what they do No, no, no! No, no, no! No, no, no!

It's that kind of sadness That grows deeper every second If you're not hell-bent and vigilant It'll swallow you whole in a minute Before you know it you're composing suicide letters In the darkest corner of your mind Don't say the words aloud 'Cause after that it's just a matter of the ink in a pen Fleshin' these fantasies out It's that kind of sadness That you feel compelled to keep to yourself Like if you told anyone else They'd stuff you with pills and say, "Here, man. These should help." Before you know it you're composing suicide letters In the darkest corner of your mind Don't say the words aloud 'Cause after that it's just a matter of the ink in a pen Fleshin' these fantasies out He's out, he's out, he's out of time.

Joey the redhead You can find him on the world wide web He likes coffee, music, and puppies He lives happily with his hubby Joey the redhead Live in Las Vegas And he smokes too many cigarettes That's not a regret, it's just a statement. And if there's one thing he wishes he could look back and tell his former self It would be to put the past up on the shelf Stop tryin' so hard. Stop tryin' so hard and just love who you are!

Saturday Susan to the untrained eye She is a vixen, her heels are high He's broken, she'll fix him She'll take him in, she'll let him come "Come just as you are," she says. Light the candles and melt the wax Hold your breath and arch your back Practice laughing in the mirror Then don your confidence as he draws near Open the door in your little black skirt And a sheer, sexy blouse will make it easy to flirt While he's in the bathroom, you quickly undress Any man's favorite word is "Yes". Saturday Susan during the week Is a watered down version of what she makes him drink Her house is empty, full of echoing silence And he's in the cockpit, he's the absentee pilot Light the candles and melt the wax Hold your breath and arch your back Practice laughing in the mirror Then don your confidence as he draws near Open the door in your little black skirt And a sheer, sexy blouse will make it easy to flirt While he's in the bathroom, you quickly undress Any man's favorite word is... Yes! I'm in love with you! Even though you only last for a thrust or two Here you remain, you're a ghost in my house You know, you're free to leave But I can't get out. Light the candles and melt the wax Hold your breath and arch your back Practice laughing in the mirror Then don your confidence as he draws near Open the door in your little black skirt And a sheer, sexy blouse will make it easy to flirt While he's in the bathroom, you quickly undress Any man's favorite word Any man's favorite word Every man's favorite word Is "Yes". Yes. Yes. Saturday Susan.

Showering like Marion Crane Except without the murder I flushed the numbers down the john I know what I did wrong And I'm gonna fix it I'm goin' right back to the epicenter You can find me Makin' up for stolen time Wearing a smile You can find me Wakin' up from the American scheme That was installed in me In the beginning I feel a bit like Linda Blair All they remember is Regan But that little moment ain't my life anymore There's a new horizon Lookin' over the hill I'm gonna walk over there and make it mine And I don't mind If you wanna stay behind But I gotta go I just feel it's my time You can find me Makin' up for stolen time Wearing a smile You can find me Wakin' up from the American scheme That was installed in me In the beginning Was the word And the word was Love And the bird was a dove In the beginning Was the word And the word was Love And the bird was a dove Showering like Marion Crane Except without the murder I flushed the numbers down the john

Calling all children of Gaia Turn your hearts and your minds up to the sky And wonder not why Calling all children of Gaia Plant your hope and your love into the ground And let love abound You must want what you want Your desire is bigger than all of us Than all of us Than all of us Than all of us Calling all makers of art Take to your craft with the truth that is in your heart And mean no harm Calling all makers of art Be not afraid to say just what you need Your expression is beauty You must want what you want Your desire is bigger than all of us Than all of us Than all of us Than all of us Calling all children of Gaia Turn your hearts and your minds up to the sky And wonder not why Calling all children of Gaia Plant your hope and your love into the ground And let love abound Let love abound Let love abound Let love abound Let love abound Let love abound Let love abound.

A mild Winter turns into an early Spring And everyone around me seems to be moving So we transplant boxes full of old memories And we promise to make some new ones Once the dust gets to settling Familiar faces fade into the past And I'm treading water in the wake of friendships that I thought would last Nothing is forever, yeah, life likes to emphasize that. Just gotta shed my skin again and stop looking back 'Cause there's no time like the present And there's no reason to be left behind And there's no way to go back now So just swallow your pride and try to crack a smile As a young man I discovered my dad's old guitar It looked straight through me and said, "I'm gonna tell you who you are." And through the years I have learned not to argue with its conclusions It has this uncanny knack of creating and dissolving my illusions 'Cause there's no time like the present And there's no reason to be left behind And there's no way to go back now So just swallow your pride and crack a smile

about

The songs on this album represent an effort to live in the present tense, even when it's not convenient; trying to see the beauty in joy, heartache, and everything between.

Northwest Music Scene Review:
On his new CD Let Love Abound, northwest native David Johnson tips his hand in the first song, “Strange Little Pearl” with the lyrics “…drag my heart up and down the fret board.” And so it begins with Johnson opening his head and pouring his thoughts and experiences into stories set to lovely music.

Let Love Abound, Johnson’s third album so far, was released in September 2016, with his independent status being no surprise, because I doubt most labels would see the value of Johnson’s lyrical stylings. That said, there is value in songs that tell the tale without pretension or embroidery, which is what is offered here; a singer/songwriter’s free-thinking personal journey, raw and unabridged.

Musically, the line-up on this release is top shelf with Spencer Carlson, Ninjanun, Phil Hirschi, Ryan Henry Ward, Ray Coughlin, Paul Jenkins, and Michael Kundu all playing roles in creating this album. Ninjanun is featured on “Supercede the Satellites,” but I was surprised to learn all the other harmonies on the disc were Johnson’s voice. His choices were interesting in that regard and added depth to the music which some might characterize as edgy folk, but personally, I think of it as more as hipster new age folk. I can’t explain that to you. You’ll just have to find out for yourself.

The subjects covered in this 13-song collection are odd, funny, sad, and tell the listener a lot about the complex being that is David Johnson. It was recorded at Egg Studios, produced by Conrad Uno, and really is Johnson’s best work yet.
